About Feed the Hood
Feed the Hood is a program focused on addressing food and resource needs amongst the most underserved and under-resourced populations of Oakland– our unhoused brothers and sisters. It’s our opportunity to collectively restore some humanity to an otherwise ignored population of people by providing them with the bare essentials: a meal, water, hygiene supplies, and a smile. The Feed the Hood events provide meals and high-demand hygiene necessities and other basic supplies to thousands of our unhoused neighbors across Oakland, prioritizing Deep East Oakland curbside communities (zip codes 94605, 94603 and 94621).
The Feed the Hood events provide large-scale community service opportunities for people across Northern California to give back to unhoused populations across Oakland. The events galvanize community members, schools, churches, corporations and many others to help meet the immediate needs of Oakland’s unhoused.
Since the Feed the Hood program’s inception in September 2017, the program has galvanized over 10,000 community volunteers, distributed 51,000 meals, and distributed countless numbers of hygiene kits and supplies. The program has served over 25,000 unhoused persons across Oakland. The Feed the Hood program has inspired community members, schools, churches and other organizations throughout the Bay Area to tackle the homelessness crisis as classroom and student projects.
Prior to the pandemic from April 2019 to March 2020, twice a week EOC served recovered hot food from Silicon Valley tech companies to curbside communities, totalling 41,600 pounds.

I Love Being Black featured Feed the Hood and the homelessness
crisis in Oakland
Homelessness in Oakland has grown by more than 25% over the last two years with there being 3,000 homeless persons-- 70% of which are unsheltered. African-Americans make up 28% of Oakland’s population, but disproportionately account for 70% of the homeless population and are heavily located in Deep East Oakland. I Love Being Black went live to their 6 million+ Facebook followers during Feed the Hood 4 on Sunday, February 4, 2018 to document this large scale opportunity to give back to Oakland and to shed light on some of the issues affecting the Black homeless population in Oakland.
