Growing up in Oakland, it was not uncommon for many of our friends and families to gather together to celebrate Halloween by participating in festivities...outside of Oakland. It doesn't seem that this habit as changed much as many families continue to go trick-or-treating in neighboring cities for a variety of reasons.

We want to be safe, we want the best experiences, and fun times for our kids and the entire family. We searched and compiled a list of activities that will allow you to have a safe Halloween weekend right here in Oakland!

Oakland Parks & Recreation is holding Halloween festivities at several recreation centers this weekend:

  • Friday, October 28. A Monster Jam will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at Dimond Recreation Center, 3860 Hanly Road. The Halloween-themed pajama-jam party for youngsters ages 4 to 12 will have arts and crafts, games, a dance party and a monstrous dinner. $5 admission.

  • Friday, October 28.  Halloween Funky Fright Fest at the Willie Keyes Recreation Center, 3131 Union St., from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday will have live music by DJ Mo Thriller, a haunted house (closes at 7 p.m.), a monster dash dance and a costume contest with a $25 prize. The party is for youngsters age 6 to 12; free.

  • Saturday, October 29.  A Harvest Festival Pumpkin Patch is planned for 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Carmen Flores Recreation Center, 1637 Fruitvale Ave. There will be free hot dogs, cookie decorating, jumpers and pumpkins for the picking.

  • Saturday, October 29. A Halloween Fall Carnival will be noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Lincoln Square Recreation Center, 250 10th St. The carnival for children ages 5 to 12 will have games, treats and a child-friendly haunted house. The carnival is being put on by the Lincoln Square Recreation Center and UC Berkeley Circle K International Service Group.

Last, but not least, check out our friends over at City Slicker Farms who are hosting a Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 29.  The Harvest Festival is fun for the entire family-- featuring a farmers market, games, workshops, a Dia de los Muertos celebration, live music, tours and more fun!  See the flyer below
